Richmond: 4 shootings in 24 hours

On Thursday night, April 30, 2026, Richmond police responded to a critical shooting in the 2200 block of Afton Avenue. Officers arrived at the Southside apartment complex around 10:00 p.m. to find an adult male suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition as detectives from the Major Crimes Division continue to search the grounds for evidence and interview witnesses.

This incident marked a grim milestone for the city, as it was the fourth shooting in South Richmond within a single 24-hour period. This rapid succession of violence has put the community on high alert, with Crime Insider sources highlighting a significant spike in local crime that has claimed lives and injured several people, including children and teenagers, in less than a day.

The string of violence began earlier on Thursday, April 30, just after midnight. Officers discovered a man shot inside a vehicle in the 700 block of Richmond Highway. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the victim eventually succumbed to his injuries, making it the first homicide in this specific 24-hour window. No suspects have been named in that case, which set a somber tone for the hours to follow.

The violence continued into the afternoon with two separate incidents involving young victims. At approximately 3:00 p.m., a 6-year-old boy was shot in the leg near East 13th and Crane Streets in the John Graham Homes area. Shortly thereafter, a 16-year-old girl was wounded in a shooting at Southside Plaza. While both juveniles are expected to survive, the broad daylight nature of these attacks has intensified public concern over safety in public spaces.

Adding to the day’s tragedy, police also responded to a double shooting at Carter Jones Park around 7:23 p.m. In that incident, a juvenile female was killed, and another person was injured. Between the fatal highway shooting, the injuries to two children, and the critical shooting on Afton Avenue, Richmond authorities are currently managing multiple active investigations across the Southside and are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.
