A 29-year-old daycare worker, Jan Carlos Berrios-Otero (known to children as “Mr. John”), was arrested on April 1, 2026, for the sexual assault of a 4-year-old boy at the BrightPath Avon Early Learning and Child Care Center in Avon, Connecticut.
The alleged assault occurred on March 30, 2026, during nap time at the facility located at 144 Simsbury Road.
Newly released court documents from April 16, 2026, reveal that classroom surveillance video shows Berrios-Otero lying next to the boy under a blanket for 47 minutes. During this time, his hand appeared to move under the blanket near the child’s genitals. The child’s parents discovered injuries (redness, swelling, and a scab) and reported that their son said, “Mr. John did it”.
Berrios-Otero was charged with fourth-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor. He is currently held on a $250,000 bond.
BrightPath confirmed that Berrios-Otero is no longer employed at the facility and stated they are cooperating with the Avon Police Department and the Department of Children and Families (DCF). The victim’s parents have filed a lawsuit against BrightPath’s parent company, Busy Bees, Ltd., alleging a failure to properly supervise and protect children.
