A domestic dispute led to a multi-site shooting spree in Muscatine, Iowa, on Monday, June 1, 2026, leaving seven people dead, including the gunman. The Muscatine Police Department identified the shooter as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland. Authorities confirmed that all six victims are believed to be family members of the shooter, though their identities and exact relationships have not yet been publicly released.
The violence began just after noon when police responded to a home in the 200 block of Park Avenue and discovered four people dead from gunshot wounds. McFarland fled the scene before officers arrived, but authorities quickly tracked him to a pedestrian bridge on the Riverfront Trail along the Mississippi River. When confronted by police, McFarland shot and killed himself. Subsequent investigations led officers to two additional crime scenes: a home in the 1500 block of Mill Street and a business in the 800 block of Grandview Avenue, where two more deceased adult males were found.
Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies stated that the public is no longer in danger, as investigators are certain McFarland acted alone. The Muscatine Police Department, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Iowa State Patrol, and the Muscatine County Sheriff’s Department are conducting a joint investigation into the exact timeline and motive.
