Executive sous chef at UMass Amherst arraigned for the murder of his wife

Jeffrey C. MacDonald, an award-winning executive sous chef at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, was arraigned on April 23, 2026, for the murder of his wife, Emma MacDonald. The 36-year-old Wilbraham resident pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and assault and battery on a police officer during his appearance at the Eastern Hampshire District Court.

The incident occurred on the evening of Wednesday, April 22, in Room 413 of the Hotel UMass, located within the university’s Campus Center. According to police reports, officers responding to a 7:42 p.m. emergency call encountered a “violent struggle” with MacDonald, who allegedly struck an officer multiple times before being restrained. Once inside the room, authorities found 31-year-old Emma MacDonald deceased with significant injuries. Following his arrest, MacDonald allegedly confessed to investigators that he had intentionally beaten his wife to death.

The tragedy has deeply impacted the university community, as both the suspect and the victim were staff members at UMass Amherst. Jeffrey MacDonald was a prominent figure in the school’s dining system and was recently honored as the 2025 Chef of the Year by the American Culinary Federation. Chancellor Javier Reyes issued a statement describing the news as “heartbreaking and deeply unsettling,” while reassuring the public that there is no ongoing threat to the campus.

MacDonald is currently being held without bail. The judge has ordered a competency evaluation for the defendant, and a probable cause hearing is scheduled for mid-May.
