Marlene Vidal, a 34-year-old mother from Edinburg, Texas, has been charged with two counts of capital murder and one count of arson after her two young children were found dead inside a burning vehicle in San Antonio. Early Friday morning, May 15, 2026, a bystander walking a dog spotted a white Hyundai SUV engulfed in flames behind a commercial warehouse. The witness encountered Vidal at the scene, who claimed she had already notified authorities, though the witness proceeded to call 911 regardless. After extinguishing the blaze, first responders discovered the bodies of a 7-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy inside the vehicle.
San Antonio Police Department officials reported that on-scene evidence, area surveillance footage, and statements made by Vidal indicate she was solely responsible for the incident. While a definitive motive remains under investigation, police noted that severe mental health issues appear to have played a significant role. The children’s father confirmed to authorities that their 5-year-old son was autistic and non-verbal. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office is currently conducting autopsies to determine if the children were alive when the fire was set.
Vidal is currently booked into jail with her total bond set at $2.1 million—$1 million for each capital murder count and $100,000 for the arson charge. She has requested a court-appointed defense attorney to represent her. Because the victims were under the age of 10, the charges qualify for capital punishment under Texas state law. If convicted, Vidal faces a legal penalty of either life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.
