Three dead and 18 wounded

Over the weekend of May 8–11, 2026, Chicago experienced another wave of gun violence that left at least three people dead and 18 others wounded across the city. The casualties included individuals ranging in age from 17 to 79, illustrating the broad impact of the violence on various neighborhoods. This particular weekend added to a growing concern among city officials and residents, as CPD data from early 2026 showed a notable uptick in both homicides and non-fatal shootings compared to the same period in 2025.

One of the most publicized tragedies was the death of Giovannie E. Vargas, a 19-year-old aspiring barber from Cary, Illinois. He was fatally shot around 1:50 a.m. on Saturday while attending a party in the West Lawn neighborhood. Family members told WGN-TV that Vargas was a “selfless” young man who was struck in the back while intervening to help a friend who was being assaulted by another group. His death has drawn significant attention from suburban communities, highlighting how the city’s violence often affects visitors and residents from the surrounding Chicagoland area.

Beyond the shooting of Vargas, the weekend saw multiple other violent incidents, including a triple shooting on the city’s East Side that left one man in critical condition and two others injured. Additionally, Chicago Sun-Times reports indicated a 40-year-old man was fatally shot during a fight in Little Village on Saturday afternoon. These events took place as the city recorded its 143rd homicide of the year by May 9, a figure that tracking sites like the Chicago Tribune Homicide Tracker noted was 10 more than at the same point in the previous year.

This rise in violence comes at a time when the Chicago Police Department is reporting a 39% increase in murders for the month of April compared to last year. While city leaders have previously touted long-term decreases in crime, the first third of 2026 has seen a reversal of that trend, with shootings of and by police officers also on the rise. Detectives from Area One are currently investigating the death of Vargas and other weekend victims, but as of early this week, no arrests have been made in connection with many of these cases.
