Zachary Lavel Jackson Jr. accused of murdering and dismembering his mother

The Natchez community remains in shock following the arrest of 29-year-old Zachary Lavel Jackson Jr., who is accused of murdering and dismembering his mother, Lana Brown Bradley. The incident was uncovered during a welfare check on April 4, 2026, after family members grew concerned when they couldn’t reach the retired educator. Upon arrival at Bradley’s Melanie Road home, Adams County deputies discovered a horrific scene; Jackson was found barricaded in a bathroom while parts of his mother’s remains were located in a suitcase and a nearby wooded area.

The motive appears rooted in a domestic dispute regarding Jackson’s residence at the home. Sheriff Travis Patten revealed that Bradley had grown fearful of her son and had attended a court hearing just one day before her death to begin the eviction process against him. Investigators believe the fatal encounter occurred shortly after that legal move, resulting in what the sheriff described as one of the most heinous crimes in the area’s history.

Jackson currently faces charges of first- and second-degree murder, mayhem, and tampering with evidence. He is being held without bond as the legal process unfolds, with a preliminary hearing set for today, April 28, 2026, to determine if the evidence is sufficient for a grand jury indictment. The case has deeply impacted the Natchez Adams School District, where Bradley served as a dedicated teacher and administrator for over three decades.
