In early April 2026, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Lieutenant Joel Christopher Kohnert and his wife, Jennifer Renee Kohnert, were arrested for the severe, long-term abuse and confinement of their 12-year-old adopted daughter. The investigation began in February after the child, having transitioned to public school, reported her conditions to a school resource officer. Authorities described a “house of horrors” where the victim was confined to a sparse room for years to prevent “wandering,” while the couple’s six biological children lived in normal conditions.
Reports detail extreme neglect, including being locked in a room without bathroom access, forcing the child to use the floor and clean up with her own clothing. Alleged punishments included forced physical exertion, outdoor bathing, and writing out Bible verses. The girl further reported physical assaults by Jennifer Kohnert, including slapping, hair pulling, and kicking.
Following their arrest, bonds were set at $100,000 each with strict no-contact orders regarding minors. Despite defense claims of being “devout Christians,” a judge emphasized that the alleged abuse was not a matter of faith. All seven children were removed from the home by state authorities, and Joel Kohnert was placed on unpaid administrative leave.
