Second mass shooting in Chicago in less than a week

The incident was a deadly mass shooting that took place in the heart of Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. Around 4:30 p.m., gunfire erupted at a busy produce stand near the intersection of 26th Street and South St. Louis Avenue. A white Honda sedan reportedly pulled up, and at least one shooter exited the vehicle and opened fire, discharging roughly 20 to 40 rounds in less than 10 seconds.

The shooting claimed the life of 46-year-old Antonio “Coco” Padilla, a well-known local fruit vendor who was shot multiple times while working his stand. Neighbors and witnesses reported that his wife and young child were just steps away in a nearby truck when the attack occurred. Three women—ages 25, 42, and 47—were also wounded in the barrage. One woman was shot in the face and listed in fair condition, while another, who was shot in the back, transported herself to the hospital in critical condition.

On Thursday, Chicago police released new surveillance video showing three masked suspects in a white vehicle believed to be involved in the crime. The suspects are described as being between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall, wearing dark hoodies and dark pants. Authorities are investigating whether a white Honda later found burned in the Englewood neighborhood is the same vehicle used in the attack.

This event marked the second mass shooting in Chicago in less than a week, leading to heightened community concern. Cook County Crime Stoppers is currently offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest in the case.
