Colby Perdue infanticide

The maternal grandmother, Jodie Watts, shared her heartbreak following the death of her 2-month-old grandson, Preston Perdue. Speaking through her grief, Watts described the infant as a light in her life, specifically recalling his “big blue eyes” as the image she will carry with her forever. She expressed a profound emotional connection to the child, noting that she felt his sadness as her own whenever he made certain faces.

The tragedy unfolded after Preston was brought to Brenner Children’s Hospital on April 28 with severe, suspicious injuries. Despite medical efforts, the infant passed away shortly after. Preston’s mother, Peyton Smith, echoed the grandmother’s sentiments, describing her son as a joyful baby who was always smiling, making the sudden loss even more devastating for the family.
Authorities arrested the child’s father, 24-year-old Colby Perdue, on May 8. He is currently facing charges of murder and felony child abuse inflicting serious injury. He is being held at the Stokes County Jail without bond as the investigation continues.

In the wake of the loss, the community and family members have rallied to support the grieving mother. A memorial fund was established to help cover the unexpected funeral costs and to provide financial stability for Smith as she navigates the legal proceedings and the aftermath of the tragedy.
